Rupture Discs

When a vessel, reactor or pipeline exceeds its design pressure, the relief path must open first time, every time, to prevent catastrophic failure. A rupture disc (also called a bursting disc) is engineered as the deliberate weak point in the pressure relief system: a non-reclosing relief device that bursts within a certified tolerance of its marked burst pressure, delivering instantaneous, full-opening relief while maintaining a bubble-tight seal in normal operation. Rupture discs serve as primary relief, as secondary protection alongside a safety valve, or in series with a relief valve to isolate it from the process media.

The Continental Disc Corporation (CDC) rupture discs are available with burst pressures ranging from below 1 barg to 276 barg (4,000 psig), line sizes to 900 mm (DN900), and maximum recommended operating ratios up to 95 per cent of the marked burst pressure. Discs carry the ASME Section VIII UD stamp with National Board-certified flow resistance (KR), are CE marked under the Pressure Equipment Directive, and are selected and installed in accordance with AS 1358. Reverse-acting, tension-acting, non-fragmenting and sanitary designs are available, together with burst indicators (which connect to sensors and trip alarms) and holders.
